Feedback From Nina Simone's Daughter Regarding Controversial Biopic

With the growing controversy regarding the upcoming Nina Simone biopic, Ms. Simone's daughter, Simone gives her feedback, penning an open letter on her mother's website.

Here you go:

Greetings Nina Simone Lovers, Simone here.

I have read many of the comments am happy you all took the time to share your thoughts and feelings.

Here’s mine:

When the announcement initially hit the press with MJ Blige cast as Nina (about 6 yrs ago) I heard it along with everyone else. The story was written as a love story between my mother and her former nurse, Clifton Henderson and primarily takes place during the last 8 years of her life.

Please note, this project is unauthorized. The Nina Simone Estate was never asked permission nor invited to participate.

I have seen many names regarding who you think should play the role of Nina. Remember Angela Bassett as Tina Turner? SHE NAILED IT! Angela Bassett is an ACTRESS! And, we all know she lip synced along with Tina and did an amazing job. Personally, I prefer an actress to a singer. Just because a person is great at one does not mean they will be great at the other. If written, funded and CAST PROPERLY a movie about my mother will make an lasting imprint.

My vision of a movie about my mother includes SO many pivotal moments that are monumentally important towards relaying the journey of a woman whose journey began as a child prodigy born in North Carolina in the 1930′s…too many to list here but, trust when I say the tale will inspire through the sheer sharing of HOW Eunice Waymon became Nina Simone, The High Priestess Of Soul renowned worldwide. How many of you know my mother’s FIRST love was classical music? Do you know the hours she practiced preparing to audition for the Curtis Institute of Music only to be rejected because of the color of her skin?

**After my mother made her transition I accepted a diploma from that very same institute with a speech she began writing but was unable to finish prior to her death.**

As a child, my mother was told her nose was too big and she was too dark yet she graduated valedictorian of her high school class – The Allen School for Girls – AND, skipped two grades. Nina was one of the most outspoken, prolifically gifted artists using the stage to speak out against racism during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960′s. Her friends included Betty Shabazz, Lorraine Hansberry (my godmother), Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, Miriam Makeba, Stokely Carmichael, Presidents, Prime Ministers, Kings and Queens worldwide.

Had she become a classical pianist, which was her dream….shattered, I doubt she would have found her true destiny. Nina Simone was a voice for her people and she spoke out HONESTLY, sang to us FROM HER SOUL, shared her joy, pain, anger and intelligence poetically in a style all her own.

My mother stood up for justice, by any means necessary hahahaha YES, she was a revolutionary til the day she died. From Tragedy to Transcendence – MY VISION. The whole arc of her life which is inspirational, educational, entertaining and downright shocking at times is what needs to be told THE RIGHT WAY.

By the way:

Clifton Henderson was gay. He was not attracted to women. So, the truth is…Nina Simone and Clifton Henderson NEVER had a relationship other than a business one.

Please correct me, but isn’t a biopic the story of one’s life?

I have faith things will work out the right way and my mother’s real story will be told. For all she endured while here and all of the lives she has touched, she DESERVES to be remembered for who she truly was; not some made up love story from a former nurse/manager (now deceased) who sold his life rights because of his relationship to Nina Simone.

Ciao Y’All….Simone

Jaylaan Llewellyn's bluhammock music: New Virginia Coalition video

Movers & Shakers: Jaylaan Ahmad Llewellyn of bluhammock music & bluhorse clothing

Jaylaan Llewellyn with her artist, Cary Brothers

The 29-year-old music executive and riding enthusiast Jaylaan AhmadLlewellyn, is bringing some new flavor to the table.
Jaylaan Llewellyn is the founder and CEO of bluhammock music and bluhorse clothing.

Bluhammock music is an indie record label based in New York City and is distributed by Sony’s RED distribution arm via MRI. Llewellyn has a roster of 8 artists on her label so far including: Virginia Coalition, Cary Brothers, Swati and Speech (yes, from Arrested Development), to name a few. All of her acts have their own unique flavor and have been featured on hit tv shows like The Hills and Greys Anatomy. This year there are plans to feature bluhammock music production in indie films.

Sister company, bluhorse clothing, was launched last summer and is a collection for hip, equestrian lifestyle-oriented individuals and represents relaxed luxury with an outdoor sensibility, and sporty, hip vibe. Her clothing line is gaining popularity on the equestrian set, here in the south and her products have sponsor at a few events. Now, I think it makes perfect sense that Jaylaan went into the equestrian clothing business. Those in the know, know that she's an avid riding enthusiast who participates in a lot of equestrian events, particularly here in South Florida, in Wellington and Palm Beach. Might I add, she's one of the few sistas competing in these events and she does quite well.

The Harvard University graduate is the daughter of Shahara and J. Bruce Llewellyn, currently chairman and CEO of the Philadelphia Coca-Cola Bottling Company.

P.S.
If you're in Florida this Sunday, February 17th, Jaylaan's throwing the blu Party, benefitting the US Equestrian Team Foundation and the John T. Petters Foundation in Wellington, FL

Flashes: Nicole,Rihanna, Serena Williams & Whitney Houston @ Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Party

(Photos: Patrick McMullan)

The Grammy's were in full effect in Los Angeles this weekend and Black stars dominated. Clive Davis through his annual pre-Grammy party and the sista were out and looking gorgeous.

Barbados gem, Rihanna wore a 70's inspired silk jersey gown and looked fresh-faced and beautiful as always.

Diva, Whitney Houston looked so refreshed, healthy and happy in a glamorous sequins gown.

Model and Eddie Murphy's ex-wife, Nicole Mitchell, oozed sex and glamour in a champagne, tiered and body-hugging gown. Nicole's gown is one of my favorites.

Now, I must say I'm sooo impressed with how Serena Williams is styling herself these days. The tennis legend looked flirty, feminine and pretty in a flattering red cocktail dress.

Work it!!

Barack Obama Inspired Lenny Kravitz's "Love Revolution"

During Kravitz's recent interview with Rolling Stones, he spoke on how Obama's message of hope, change, communication and cleaning up the American image, inspired his new album. Rockstar, Lenny Kravitz releases his latest album "It's Time for a Love Revolution" on February 5th.

Many music critics, including Rolling Stones magazine have given his "Love Revolution" outstanding reviews. Critics describe it as Kravitz's best album yet and having a vintage 1960's/ classic rock/ soul vibe with a postive message.
Lenny is one of my favorites and I listened to his new album and I concur, it's sounds really good. I'm digging his hippy vibe, America's current political climate is definitely on his mind.

To hear more about what Kravitz thinks about Barack Obama, America's state of mind and love, click here to listen to Kravitz's interview with Rolling Stones. Watch his live performance below.

PS
I can't help but wonder if Lenny's declaration of celibacy served as an inspiration as well. He's a rock legend living part-time in Miami Beach where celibacy isn't that easy. Just a thought.

Happy Birthday Dame Shirley Bassey !!

Dame Shirley Bassey held her belated 70th birthday party in England last night at the Clivedon Hotel. The Capricorn actually turned 70 this past January 8th. Dame Shirley Veronica Bassey, is a Welsh singer, perhaps best-known for performing the theme songs to the James Bond films Goldfinger (1964), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), and Moonraker (1979). She is the only singer to have recorded more than one James Bond theme song. She has sold around 135 million records in her 55 years as a recording artist and has a new album out called "Get the Party Started."
Watch this vintage clip of Dame performing "Diamonds are Forever." Pure classic.

MIA's New Video: "Paper Planes"

I'm loving M.I.A's new song " Paper Planes." This chick is so funky, unique and could care less what any thinks of her style, which makes me like her even more. If you've never heard of M.I.A aka Maya Arulpragasam, is a rapper, singer, songwriter, producer, and painter from London. Her music is best explained as multi-genre ( grime, hip-hop, ragga, dancehall, electro, baile funk).

MTV actually censored her video and she's furious about it. But I've got her uncensored version, check it out!

Reggae Rock Fusion: Tessanne Chin

I was recently turned on to this reggae-fusion sensation from Jamaica by the name of Tessanne Chin. She has a voice powerful enough to carry her multi-genre sound. Jamaicans know her as the lead singer of reggae-rock band, Mile High.
Before pursuing a solo career, Tessanne gained priceless experience as a back-up singer to world renowned reggae legend Jimmy Cliff and has been singing professionally since the age of 17.

Tessanne's music is a spicy blend of Reggae, Dancehall, Rock and Soul. Her new song "Black Books" sounds like a gumbo of Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Taylor Dayne and Celine Dion's voices, with a Bob Marley/ Nirvana /Chris Daughtry vibe.

Check out her video "Black Books" below.

Check out this new tune from Janet Jackson. Janet has finally come back to her feel-good, up-tempo style. I'm really feeling this jam.
